PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

MaryAnne Donat

We, as Republican Women, are the Heart of the Republican Party; and I hope that you all feel rewarded by the sense of accomplishment for what we do.

An “admirable thank you”, to all of you ladies and gentleman involved in all activities from the last month and now! We got a great deal accomplished, and succeeded well in our endeavors planned and yet to reach.

All your stamina and determination never ends.
Recruiting members, Registering Republicans and finally returning Republicans to the White House and the State Houses will then complete and encourage the race and competition that solely relies on a proud TEAMWORK, which goes hand in hand with “DUTY”, and a unique “PRIVILEGE” for all Republican citizens.

It is a pleasure to notify those of you who may not yet know, that thanks to the generosity and support of a grant from our Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, the CRP is doubling the voter registration bounty paid to volunteer organizations from $ 3.00 to$ 6.00 per valid registration, effective May 1st, 2008. The expanded voter registration effort will run through September 1st 2008.

From the National Federation of Republican Women’s Political Briefing, we learn that the “Economic Stimulus” and its effects will begin and reach millions of households, (to start May 2nd 2008), rebates by direct deposit electronically and by paper checks ! It is hoped this money will help Americans offset the high prices we are seeing at the gas pump and at the groceries stores, and to give the economy a boost to help pull out of the economic slowdown .

The Advocacy Workshop in Sacramento for Cheryl and myself was in general a success, with a lot happening throughout the 2 days of many activities. Every year this program is exciting, progressive and effective.

A variety of topics were covered by our volunteer Legislative Analysts. We heard from several guest speakers on Education, tax increase, unemployment, increase in gas prices, government services and welfare for poor and unemployed, participated in the “Capitol Steps Rally”, attended the Ambassador’s Event at the Historic Governor’s Mansion, and attended a luxurious set up Ambassador Reception.

Our club was able to hold a drawing at Advocacy for a “Vacation Package”. We gave CFRW a percentage and netted $148.50 for our treasury.
Students also attended and were introduced to the legislative process. I was particularly impressed with their preparation and the questions they asked Honorable Bill Jones, California chair of the John McCain for President Campaign, featured as the speaker for lunch.

It is important for us all to encourage the younger generation. The rewards can be outstanding.
Come to the LA County meeting Wednesday May 28, 2008 to participate in the awards that will be given to 3 students, and to find out even more. The featured speaker for the day is California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring.

THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES

Special Order 40: Instituted in 1997, Special Order 40 states that Los Angeles Police Department officers shall not initiate police action with the objective of discovering the alien status of a person. Long controversial, Special Order 40 has come under fire again recently, following the slaying of a young man by a recently released from jai, illegal alien. On June 30th, Judicial Watch is scheduled to go to court in Los Angeles for a taxpayer lawsuit challenging Special Order 40.

THE STATE

from Karen Bass website

A new person to reacon with in Sacramento - Karen Bass, speaker of the California State Assembly

Karen Bass has been a State Assembly Member representing Los Angeles’ 47th Assembly District since 2005. In May 2008, she made history when the Los Angeles Democrat became the 67th Speaker of the California State Assembly, catapulting a Democratic woman to the post for the first time in the state’s history. Along with the California political first, Speaker Bass makes national history as the first African American woman in the country to serve in this powerful state legislative role.

Speaker Bass has been a part of the leadership since her first term when she was appointed to Majority Whip. In her second term, she was elevated to the post of Majority Floor Leader, making her the first woman to hold the post and the second African American to serve in the position. Speaker Bass, who served as the vice chair of the Legislative Black Caucus, commissioned a report to research the demographic profile of Black Californians including the basic social and economic conditions. The State of Black California report included a statewide organizing effort to involve the Black community in identifying their concerns and making legislative recommendations. As the chair of the CA Assembly Select Committee on Foster Care, she lead the effort to secure more than $82 million as well as to implement a host of new laws to help improve the state’s Foster Care System.

Since taking office, Speaker Bass has created state laws including providing Healthy Families Insurance Coverage to help prevent children from going without health insurance; a small business policy that removes red tape by preventing businesses from filling out duplicate certification forms for the city and state; and a measure that expands the Baldwin Hills Conservancy. She has also secured more than $2.3 million to help revitalize the historic Vision Theater in Los Angeles; and more than $600 million for Los Angeles Unified School District.

Committed to serving the 47th Assembly District (47th AD), Speaker Bass created the People’s Council, which is made up of four Commissions (Education, Environment, Small Business and Health) in order for constituents to get involved in the political process. The Commissions also host events and activities in the district to provide information on key issues affecting 47th AD residents.

Before Speaker Bass began her political career, she founded and ran Community Coalition. As executive director, she built a community based social justice organization in South Los Angeles to empower residents to get involved in making a difference. Today, the organization is considered a model to engage the community throughout the country.

California’s Assembly Speaker grew up in the Venice/Fairfax area. She is the only girl of DeWitt and Wilhelmina Bass. Her father worked as mail carrier and her mother, who once owned her own beauty salon, was a stay at home mother. Speaker Bass grew up with three brothers – two older and one younger. She is a true Los Angelino graduating from Hamilton High School, Cal State Dominguez Hills (BA – Health Sciences) and University of Southern California School of Medicine (Physician Assistant Certificate).

Speaker Bass, who is divorced, had one daughter, Emilia Bass-Lechuga and four step children. Emilia, who grew up to be a beautiful, passionate woman, wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps and help others. After marrying the love of her life, Michael Wright, Emilia continued to study to be a civil rights lawyer. Emilia’s passion for life continues to be a motivation for Speaker Bass in her personal and professional life.

Speaker Bass represents Culver City, West Los Angeles, Westwood, Cheviot Hills, Leimert Park, Baldwin Hills, Windsor Hills, Ladera Heights, the Crenshaw District, Little Ethiopia and portions of Korea Town and South Los Angeles.

The New Party of the Rich

A recent Heritage study of incomes by congressional district, based on IRS and Census Bureau data, found that Democrats now control the majority of America's wealthiest congressional districts. More than half of the wealthiest households are concentrated in the 18 states where Democrats control both Senate seats. In contrast, the study found that the majority of conservative House members come from middle income districts.

Endangered Species Act Listing for Polar Bear???

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS)has listed the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act due to global warming. If the government doesn't list on its own, advocacy groups vow to go to court to force a listing.

Recognizing the public's emotional attraction to the polar bear, several environmentalist organizations have adopted the bear as their poster species for achieving their agenda.

In 2005 the Center for Biological Diversity, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and Greenpeace petitioned the FWS to list the polar bear as a threatened species under the Act. The petition claimed that global warming is shrinking the bears' ice floe habitat, and that without protection the bear will decline toward extinction over the next 45 years Although there is no evidence that the polar bear population is declining, in 2007 FWS proposed listing the bear as threatened. If listed, it will become the first species in the Act's 35 year history giving protection because of global warming, drastically increasing the regulatory burden on people.

Is Obama Smarter Than A 5th Grade Jaywalker?

Doug Patton

May 13, 2008

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has an indicted, Syrian-born Chicago shyster named Tony Rezko for a financial mentor. He has a screwball, race-baiting, America-hating pastor named Jeremiah Wright for a spiritual mentor. He has an unrepentant domestic terrorist named William Ayers for a political mentor. And he has one of the angriest wives ever to aspire to the position of First Lady.

Obama refuses to wear a flag lapel pin because he thinks it is more patriotic to criticize his country than to support it, or even to wear a symbol of its support.

Obama thinks those of us out here in flyover country are all a bunch of bitter, gun-toting, Bible-thumping bigots furious at "those who don't look like us."

That really should be enough to sink this lightweight candidacy filled with vague language about "hope" and "change" -- what George Will has called "rhetorical cotton candy."

But wait. There's more. Just when we thought Obama had shot himself in the last foot he had available, he presents us with another gift.

On top lapelgate and pastorgate and bittergate, now comes stategate. It seems that the brilliant Barack Obama doesn't know how many states there are in our union. In an off-the-cuff statement you will not hear about on the nightly news, Obama declared that during his presidential campaign, he has visited 57 states. He also said that he has one more to visit: Alaska and Hawaii. I swear to you, that's what the man said.
Here are his exact words: "I've now been to 57 states...I have one more to go...they wouldn't let me go to Alaska and Hawaii."

Entire books have been written about the gaffes of George W. Bush. ……But even the most misinformed American can tell you this country has 50 states, having learned that information in what? Kindergarten?

But fear not, Obama supporters; excuses will be made by the mainstream media. "He was tired," we will be told, or "he misspoke." And they will only tell you that if they are forced to report on the matter at all. The New York Times (and most other major newspapers), CNN, ABC, CBS, tax-supported PBS and especially NBC are so pro-Obama it is downright embarrassing, and make no mistake, they will continue to circle the wagons around this guy, just as they have done throughout this campaign.

Perhaps Obama should be a contestant on Fox's "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?" Or maybe Jay Leno could interview him out on Hollywood Boulevard as part of his Tonight Show "Jay Walking" segment.

How many of our states have you been to, Senator Obama? Fifty-seven? That's very impressive. I hope you get the chance to see the other one. Or is it two?

COMMUNITY CURBSIDE

Orange County Waste Management

Communities have excellent recycling programs, but it only works when everyone helps.

When throwing away household trash, make sure to separate recyclables and put in proper cart.
Equally important is to make sure you do not place un-recyclable waste in with your recyclables.

Putting unacceptable waste in a recycling cart ?contaminates? the recyclable materials, meaning they have to be hand-separated at a local facility before they can be sorted for final processing.

In the city of Santa Ana an ordinance passed in 1997 makes it illegal to put non-accepted wastes into recycling carts. Waste Management is enforcing the law by placing warnings on carts that contain non-recyclable materials. If this happens four times, there is a $50 fine.

REFUSE – Refuse includes household waste that is NOT placed in recycling carts:

Food waste Pet waste
Paper towels Tissue paper
Disposable diapers Waxed paper
Paper napkins Ceramics
Light bulbs
Painted and treated wood
Palm branches and all other non-recyclables

RECYCLABLES

Newspaper Mixed paper
Magazines Telephone books
Cereal boxes Soda and liquor bottles
Aluminum cans Juice cans
Plastic milk containers.
Plastic water bottles and similar items.

GREEN WASTE

Yard clippings and other shrubbery from your garden, including grass, leaves, green plants, wood chips, sawdust and small wood scraps.

Working together, we can make recycling work.
